“The world has never yet seen a truly great and virtuous nation because in the degradation of woman the very fountains of life are poisoned at their source.” - Lucretia Mott - Women's Rights Activity, Abolitionist, Quaker, and Social Reformer

The Westbrook High School Civil Rights Team would like to encourage all students and staff to take time this month, along with every month, to recognize and respond in some positive ways to Women's History Month.  Women's History is American History.

The Westbrook High School Civil Rights Team meets Friday during ACE in Room 317 - All Students are welcome regardless of race, skin color, national origin and ancestry, religion, disabilities, gender (including gender identity and expression), and sexual orientation. Please join us in our efforts to make Westbrook High School a more inclusive and accepting place.

Today, March 6th, is Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent for many Christians.   Ash Wednesday takes place 46 days before Easter Sunday, and is chiefly observed by Catholics, although many other Christians observe it too.

Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the head. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us. As the priest applies the ashes to a person's forehead, he speaks the words: "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."  Many Christians who observe this day will have ashes in the shape of a cross placed on their foreheads.  If you would like to learn more about this religious holiday, please follow the link above.

Upcoming Play:

We will be presenting this year’s one-act festival play during Ace on Thursday, March 7th. The play is a 35 minute comedy by Ed Monk entitled “A Company of Players.”  We will also be performing 2 evening shows for the public, Wednesday, March 6th at 7pm, and one that Thursday evening March 7th at 7pm.

We have real silverware in  the cafe!

Every day 700 plastic forks, spoons and knives have been getting tossed in the trash at WHS! Our switch to real silverware has so many benefits! We will help keep plastics out of the landfills and oceans, reduce air pollution and the need for oil drilling.    Don't throw away the real silverware.  Please place your forks, spoons and knives in the silverware tub before returning your tray. Together, Westbrook can make a difference.

The Portland Sea Dogs are hosting their 12th Annual College Fair on Wednesday, May 8 from 3-5pm. Each student attending the fair receives two complimentary tickets to the 6pm baseball game. Names are due by April 12. If you are interested in attending please send an email to Mrs. Sturgis, Aspirations Counselor
